The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG Yet

The speculation about the recent awards show was significant, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team might be crafting a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously permissive, letting players to experiment both in story and combat. Most missions can be approached in a variety of manners, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to a new entry in this legendary franchise.
