Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
