A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose term ended the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in public projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
